During Tuesday’s keynote session at Google I/O 2024, a new update was announced for Google Photos. In fact, several significant artificial intelligence (AI) announcements were made during the CEO Sundar Pichai-led session. Out of which, what got our major attention was the release of new picture and video AI models, enhancements for Gemini 1.5 Pro, and more. It’s interesting to note that the tech giant also released Ask Photos, an intelligent chatbot powered by AI for Google Photos that streamlines the process of finding a certain photo in the library.
Pichai made a point of highlighting the company’s use of Gemini’s capabilities to create more potent search experiences within Google products throughout the presentation. One such instance is Google Photos, one of the initial platforms with AI capabilities. Users could find the photographs they were looking for with the assistance of AI tools in images, but prior to the latest improvements, these tools could only comprehend basic keywords and certain subjects. But things could get a lot simpler with the new intelligent search engine Ask Photos.

Gemini powers Ask AI, which has been optimized as a search engine. In addition to reading and comprehending a vast number of images based on their subject, background, and even digital data in the metadata, it is capable of understanding natural language commands. “You can ask questions in a natural way with Ask Photos, such as, ‘Show me the best photo with a specific contact.’ It was further stated that this new update will help save you extra time. You no longer need to do so much scrolling to find the exact image you are looking for.
It is also capable of responding to queries based on this data. In the event that the user wishes to share the trip highlights on social media, the AI may also generate a highlight reel from a recent trip by recommending the best photos and crafting unique captions for each one.
Data privacy is another area that Google is concentrating on. Ask Photos will be trained on user photo galleries, giving it access to sensitive and private information. It further stated that no advertisements would ever exploit this data.
Additionally, unless abuse and damage are addressed, the firm will not evaluate these discussions or the personal information shared in Ask Photos. Additionally, the company stated that no AI product other than Google Photos will be trained using the data.
