[How to] Enable end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger

Facebook has rolled out end-to-end encryption feature on its messenger in order to provide more security to your conversations. It is a major encryption update of Facebook Messenger. If you are not aware of the meaning of end-to-end encryption, we would like to tell you that your conversations are encrypted from one device to another so the conversation cannot be accessed by anyone other than the sender and the receiver. You can also say, this feature converts your common Conversation to Secret Conversation. It very simple to enable end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger. There are two ways to enable it-

To enable end-to-end encryption in a conversation:

Please follow below steps to enable end-to-end encryption  in a conversation-

  1. Open Facebook Messenger.

  4. Select ‘Secret Conversation’ from the ‘Settings’ menu.facebook-end-to-end-encryption-5
  5. A popup will ask you- ‘Turn on Secret Conversations?’
  6. Select ‘Turn On’.

Start a Secret Conversation from the home screen:

  1. Open Facebook Messenger.
  2. On the home screen, tap the plus (+) symbol.facebook-end-to-end-encryption-11

  4. Now tap the lock icon.facebook-end-to-end-encryption-9
  5. Select the person you want to message.facebook-end-to-end-encryption-10

Now you are good if you want to get the encryption protection, you will need to turn on this option for every conversation.

The downsides of end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger are-

  1. A word of warning, by turning on Secret Conversations, you can only communicate in this conversation thread using the device you used to turn on the encryption option. To talk to the same person using a different device you will need to start a new Secret Conversation.
  2. This encryption option work for messages, pictures, and stickers, but it doesn’t support group GIFs, videos, messages, voice and video calling or payments.
