YouTube Music Introduces ‘Hum to Search’ Feature for Song Identification on Android

Last month, while out on a drive with my friend, we played a random song from the 60s that made the moment unforgettable. The lyrics were beautiful and so was the music. The tune just got stuck in my head, and I found myself humming it all day long. Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember the lyrics, and searching random terms on YouTube didn’t help me find that wonderful song. But today, I’m thrilled because YouTube Music is rolling out a new feature that allows people like me to hum a tune and instantly find the song.

Yes! You heard it right.

A long-awaited feature that allows you to “Play, sing, or hum a song” to search is now available on YouTube Music for Android users.

All you need to do is go to the top-right corner of the platform and tap on the magnifying glass icon. You will find a new waveform icon right next to the microphone sign. Both the buttons might look a bit odd, it’s better than the main YouTube app, which puts both search functions on one page with a switcher at the top.

When you click on the waveform icon, the platform will ask you to hum a song or play so that it can go through its list and come up with a relevant result.

The latter feature was initially made available for Google Search in 2020. Improved upon from the Pixel’s Now Playing function, it was added to the YouTube app in October of last year. The purpose of AI is “to match the sound to the original recording.”

As far as I have checked on the reviews, the identification process is quick. The cover art, song name, artist, album, year, download/offline status, and shortcuts to Play or Save to your library are all displayed on a fullscreen results page. For everything else, there is the typical overflow menu.

If you want to close or start a new search, just go to the top-left corner. The platform started testing this feature in March, but Google Play Music has previously provided a similar service.

We’re witnessing a server-side upgrade for song search in YouTube Music for Android version 7.02. It hasn’t yet been released for iOS.
