Should you wait for the Pixel 10 instead of the Pixel 9 because of Tensor G5?

Apple and Qualcomm both use Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the industry leader without a doubt. After four generations, Google would depart Samsung (Foundry) as a result of this change. Due to neglected deadlines, the switch’s development was postponed until 2025 from its initial rumored 2024 release date.

In addition to its new design language, the Pixel 9 would have been a significant milestone for Google hardware if a TSMC Tensor (G4) had been released this year.

Reportedly based on TSMC’s 3-nanometer manufacturing technology, the “Tensor G5” is expected to feature an Integrated Fan-Out to reduce thickness and boost power efficiency. Increased battery life is always a plus, but having a cooler gadget and raising Tensor’s performance to a competitive level would allay any previous complaints about Google’s bespoke silicon drive that prioritizes AI over everything else.

If Google gets all the details of the Pixel 9 correct, my asterisk will be that if you wait a year, you should be able to get all that in addition to what should be a more sophisticated and future-proofed chip that is closer to the bleeding edge. For people who only purchase a phone every few years, this is a very crucial factor to take into account.

The final significant upgrade for Pixel 6 owners will be Android 15 in the fall. As a tech enthusiast, I would personally be eager to upgrade if I start losing out on the software improvements and new features that are provided with QPRs. Security patches will be available for two more years. A year later, in my opinion, would also yield notable performance gains. The Pixel 9 would include noteworthy camera and software advances.

It gets easier to hold off on upgrading till the Tensor G5 if you’re on a more recent device (Pixel 7 and higher).

Although most consumers haven’t had to worry about smartphone performance in a while, Tensor would be a more competitive and less compromised option given the alleged benefits of running on the newest silicon. Perhaps it also encourages Google, like Qualcomm and Apple, to talk more regularly about the technical details and specifications of their CPUs.

One example is the shift to Silicon at Apple. As speculation about the inevitable M1 approached, the general consensus was to hold off on purchasing an Intel-powered Mac until you could at least see what the upcoming generation had to offer. From performance to battery life, those who waited were richly rewarded.

While today’s Pixel phones are more than capable of handling greater technology in the future, the Tensor G5, which is expected to be produced by TSMC, appears to be one of those few occasions when a significant upgrade is on the horizon. If nothing else, it’s something to consider.
